MAYO AND SLIGO LOYALIST COMPENSATION CLAIMS, 1921-1923
This database of compensation claims from County Mayo and west of County Sligo* submitted to the Irish Distress & Irish Grants Committee (UK) for financial loss, incurred during the Irish Civil War, has been compiled from the CO762 file collection held in The National Archives (UK), with permission under licence to reproduce the selected images herein. This free and interactive database is the outcome of ‘Mapping the Loyalist experience in Mayo during the Irish Civil War’ project undertaken by Dr Liam Alex Heffron, kindly supported by Royal Irish Academy 2023-5, Decade of Centenaries Bursaries (please note that the citable reference refers to the original file reference in the relevant repository, but has been padded with ‘0’s where relevant, for compatibility with the search-in-order function of our platform).
*some claims from other counties are included where the applicant had a Mayo / West Sligo connection and/or were misfiled during compilation or later indexing. Part of West Sligo (namely most of Tireragh barony) was geographically located in the command of the 4th Western Division IRA - 2nd Brigade (North Mayo) and has historically identified and shared common social and economic experience with North Mayo. Thus this original Mayo study was extended into West Sligo, with a view to complete all Sligo county claim files when resources allow.
